GOTHIC includes the following modeling features and capabilities:

  • Solves equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy for three separate fields:
    1. continuous liquid
    2. steam/non-condensable gas mixture
    3. drops
  • Built-in water/steam properties
  • Multiple field approach gives separate temperatures and velocities for each of the fields.
  • Multiphase flow regime, including bubbly flow, slug flow, film flow with drops, and single phase flows.
  • Multicomponent gas field for tracking concentration of hazardous gases and chemicals.
  • Solves the compressible flow equations.
  • Solves for the temperature distribution in solid conductors and includes models for fluid to solid heat transfer as well as thermal radiation exchange.
  • Interphase phenomena including condensation on drops, films and pools; evaporation from drops; flashing; drop entrainment from films; drop deposition on walls and floors; ice formation, sublimation and melting.
  • Finite volume approach which allows modeling in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions, as well as lumped parameter modeling. Any combination of lumped parameter and multidimensional noding is permitted within a single model.
  • Hydrogen combustion in lumped parameter and multidimensional volumes.
  • Common engineered components: pumps, fans, valves, doors, vacuum breakers, heat exchangers, spray nozzles, heaters, coolers, hydrogen recombiners and ignitors.
  • kappa-epsilon turbulence model
  • Heat transfer options for regulatory compliance
